Orbital ATK is seeking aPrincipal Engineering Technologistto add to our location inMesa, AZ. The Principal Engineering Technologist is responsible for developing new methods, tooling, CNC programs and assembly instructions as well as resolving processing issues and problems involved in the manufacturing of medium caliber weapon systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, document and modify shop floor work instructions.

  • Create and edit CNC programs, preferably using MasterCAM or NX

  • Design and build tooling and fixtures

  • Investigate and troubleshoot production difficulties and take corrective measures.

  • Identify and implement cost reduction opportunities such as improved material utilization, increased machine/process efficiency, reduced cost of poor quality, etc.

  • Identification of capital equipment and justification of expenditures.

  • Reviews engineering designs for revision of tolerances, surface finishes, dimensions, material selection, etc., and initiates Engineering Change Orders where justified.

  • Work closely with shop floor personnel to evaluate and implement suggestions for improvement, provide technical training as needed, solve production issues, and conduct root cause analysis.

  • Work with vendors as needed

  • Relate well with all levels of employees within the organization being sensitive to corporate needs, employee goodwill, and the business needs

  • Work closely with and train customers as required

  • Manufacturing project management as needed

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with AA or BS degree preferred

  • 10 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment including 5 years of CNC programming

Technical Requirements:

  • CNC programming using CAD/CAM, preferably MasterCAM and NX

  • Thorough understanding of machine shop technology to include, but not limited to, 3 & 4 axis CNC Mills, Lathes with live tooling

  • Computer skills in word processing and spreadsheets

  • Ability to read Blue Prints and interpret GD&T

  • Excellent mathematical, problem solving, written and verbal communications skills

  • Thorough understanding and broad application of technical standards, principles, theories, and techniques.

Additional Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Hands on experience with Lean Manufacturing concepts and Six Sigma tools

  • Capable of setting-up and running all machine shop equipment, single piece and short run

  • Ability to perform at a high level with minimal supervision and direction

  • Familiarity with CNC machine maintenance requirements

  • Highly skilled in written and verbal communication

  • Familiarity with Process Safety Management

Physical Requirements: Most time is spent sitting with occasional standing and walking in the immediate work area or in manufacturing. Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling weights of up to 30 pounds. Periodic climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling when observing and supporting production processes. As well as reaching, handling, and manual dexterity for work on computer, measuring equipment or tooling. Vision for observing production processes, inspecting components and machinery.

Equipment Used:CNC and manual machine tools including but not limited to lathes, mills and grinders, general office equipment, PC, gauges and hand tools.

Working Environment:Work is done during normal day shift work hours with some overtime as required. Frequent time spent in production areas with typical exposure to noise, mechanical, pressurized, electrical, and explosive equipment/material, and moving objects. Depending on the area, may be exposed to fumes/odors or dirt/dust. Most work is done individually, though some time is spent working with others and all work is done around other associates. Periodic contact with outside vendors and customers.
