Orbital ATK Defense Systems Group is an industry leader in ammunition, precision and strike weapons, missile-warning solutions, and tactical rocket motors across air, sea and land-based systems. Orbital ATK Missile Defense & Controls business unit, located in Elkton, MD, provides high performance upper stages for missile defense and space applications.

Responsibilities

Perform solid rocket motor grain design and ballistics analysis to support component design and verification activities across all Missile Defense and Controls products lines, under the direction of manager and senior engineers. These designs and analyses include:

  • Development of mathematical models to match the physics of the system under evaluation including determining proper analysis methods/tools, determining proper boundary conditions, selecting applicable material properties.

  • Provide performance predictions (rocket motor thrust, pressure, total impulse, etc.) for test and flight motors.

  • Generate propellant grain designs to meet customer requirements.

  • Understand, interpret, and apply propellant ballistic data and qualitatively apply propellant mechanical properties to grain design.

  • Ability to apply Monte Carlo methods to performance data and interpret and present results to customers

  • Develop analytical approaches for resolution of unique rocket motor ballistic/performance problems. Assist in design effort of test articles to provide necessary data for full scale applications.

  • Perform interpretation of analytical results and make pertinent recommendations concerning design suitability/improvement.

  • Preparation of technical reports and presentations of work product to both internal and external customers.

  • Provide technical assessments of test hardware and test data including validation of analysis.

  • Ability to apply Lean thinking to work processes.

    Requirements

  • BSME, BSAE, Physics; MSME, is preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 years of performance analysis experience or an advanced degree with 3 or more years of experience.

  • Experience with rocket motor internal ballistics analysis using in-house or standard tools such as SPP.

  • Willing to learn in-house ballistics codes which account for physics specific to solid propellant rocket motors.

  • Experience with Matlab® and or Simulink® software.

  • Knowledge regarding combustion stability and/or plume analysis is a desirable.

  • Well-honed critical thinking skills, logical approaches, attention to detail.

  • Applicable experience with rocket propulsion elements is desirable.

  • Willingness to take on other cross discipline analysis duties when needed.

  • Secret clearance is desired or the ability to obtain Secret clearance which requires US Citizenship as a pre-requisite.

  • Personal poise, strong communication skills, ability to prepare and give presentations.

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with design and analytical staff.

  • Knowledge and/or experience with hypersonic propulsion a plus but not required.
